Antique Brass Desk Lamp
The antique brass desk lamp creates
a beautiful vintage look in any room it is placed it. This is why it's such a popular style among home
owners.
You can find originals or great reproductions, called contemporary lamps. Particularly if you
are living in an old house your antique desk lamp will fit in like a glove.
One of the good things about the modern reproductions of these lamps is the fact that they are
modern in functionality as well. For example you have lamps that reduce glare and flicker, and also simulate quite
well the natural light from outside. You can also control the wattage which allows you to get the exact amount of
light that you need for any given time of the day or night. Energy efficient models are the rage nowadays, so when
you buy one of these lamps, make sure they have this feature.
If you own an antique brass desk lamp, you know how beautiful it can be. However you also know
that at some point you need to bring it up to modern standards, that is to refurbish it, either for enhancing its
appearance or for more serious reasons. However there are a few things you need to do in order to accomplish
this.
First of all you need to clean your lamp thoroughly. Wiping it off with a damp
cloth should do the trick. If the cloth is lint free cotton, desto better. Cleaning also means polishing the
lamp and you can do that with a brass polish to apply to the lamp. To make the polish do its mojo faster, add
a few ammonia drops if you have nearby. Use an old toothbrush to get in the hard to get small areas of the
lamp.
Next, you need to use another damp cloth on the lamp to eliminate any polish residue marks that
were left there by the toothbrush. Just use some soap and warm water on the cloth, that should work quite well.
Make sure the lamp is dry after the thorough cleaning. You can do that by using a lint free towel or cloth.
Have at hand a clear varnish spray. Do not use the satin varnish. Let the varnish do its work
and only check on the antique brass desk lamp after about 12 hours or so.
As a final step you can paint it over if you want, but you can as well leave it the way it is
just now. If it's cold in the area where you're working and you do want to paint the lamp, don't do it as paint
will not stick to brass when it's cold. Get the lamp in a warmer area first.
If your antique brass desk lamp is an original (not a contemporary piece) you have to really
take care of it. Do you know that you have a fantastic collectible item in your hands?
